Research Facilities

Texas Southern University provides the top-of-the-line research facilities that support the advanced research on transportation security.  The research labs that have already been developed for the transportation security research include:

Real-Time Traffic Information Lab - Mini-TranStar:

The MiniTranStar lab at Texas Southern University is fully connected with Houston TranStar, the Houston Transportation and Emergency Management Center since December 2007.  We are now able to access the real-time traffic surveillance cameras that are installed on Houston highways by Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), and other transportation agencies.

Full-Motion Driving Simulator:

Texas Southern University has installed The DriveSafety DS-600c simulator in May 2006, which has been shown by a simulation system research studies to be capable of effectively approximating driving in the real world.  It is a fully integrated, high performance, high fidelity driving simulation system designed for use in ground vehicle research, training and assessment applications. It provides multi-channel audio/visual systems, 180°, 240°, 300°, 360° wraparound display options, full-width automobile cab including windshield, driver and passenger seats, center console and dash, full instrumentation, control loaded steering, braking and acceleration, mini-LCD rear-view mirrors, plus real-time motion simulation through DriveSafety’s Q-Motion (tm) platform.

AutoScope Mobile Traffic Lab:

The Autoscope Mobile Traffic Lab provides an effective tool for collecting on-site, real time traffic data at any locations - heavily traveled freeways, busy signalized intersections, work zones, or remote rural locations. In addition, it is a non-intrusive data collection device - it does not require placing or installing any equipment in travel lanes. The Autoscope van will serve as a platform for a wider range of transportation research.
