Analyzing Truck ...
Analyzing Truck Idling Emission Characteristics under Altered Testing Conditions

Principal Investigator:    Dr. Lei Yu

Sponsoring Agency:    Southwest Region University Transportation Center, SWUTC 167650

Period:    September 1, 2004 ~ August 31, 2005

Research Abstract:

Emissions of idling trucks under truck stop and other conditions are a complicated phenomenon that must be considered independently of the other mobile emissions. This is mainly because of the high amount and a long term of emissions produced. Various problems are associated with engine idling, including pollutant emissions, noise pollution, driver discomfort, and unnecessary fuel and maintenance costs. In this project, the truck emissions and fuel consumption in the idling are analyzed by collecting data using an advanced portable emission measurement system (PEMS), which is particularly different from the traditional emission estimation approaches (e.g. MOBILE modeling), where emission estimations are normally based on the emission data collected from the in-laboratory emission testing.

This project firstly test and analyze the idle emission characteristics of cold start engine. Then, idle emissions with and without prior on-road driving are analyzed. Furthermore, factors influencing the truck idle emissions are clarified and modeled, including the roadway facility type, distance and duration of driving before idle testing. Finally the tested idle emissions are compared with the traditional modeling approaches such as MOBILE6.2, and documentation of the research findings is provided.
