The
Bachelor of Science Degree in Airway
Science offers opportunities for
stable employment and advancement to
undergraduate students seeking a bright
future. The phenomenal growth of airline
service in the United States since 1978
has witnessed 247 million airline
passengers grow to over half a billion.
Projections are for the number of
airline travelers to reach 650 million
by the year 2000. To meet current and
future demands, aviation requires
well-educated, highly qualified people
to step into an increasingly
technological world.
The College
of Science & Technology at Texas
Southern University is one of a few
institutions of higher education
approved by and in partnership with the
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
to prepare the technically-trained
people needed for aviation careers.
Through the Airway Science Program at
Texas Southern University, students may
prepare for such diverse career fields
in aviation as air traffic control,
computer science, electronics, flight
operations, flight safety occupations,
and aviation management.
One of
aviation’s most exciting and ambitious
projects may be to automate the skies of
tomorrow. New concepts for equipment and
procedures, and new ways of solving
problems require a new type of
individual - one who can flourish in the
technical environment, a person who can
think, plan, organize and manage both
machines and people. This degree program
provides students with the opportunity
to concentrate on one of two areas:
Airway Science Management and Airway
Computer Science, which have been fully
accredited by the
National Association of Industrial
Technology (NAIT).
In addition
to academic course work, students
pursuing the B.S. in Airway Science
must undertake an internship on
a semester credit hour basis to
meet either degree requirements and gain
practical experience. Participants
providing internship sites for students
are the
Houston Airport System (HAS)
-Intercontinental (IAH), Hobby (HOU),
and Ellington (EFD) airports-, and
airlines with large operational
facilities in Houston and General
Aviation. For further information on
internships, students should contact
either the Director of Airway Science at
(713) 313-1847, or the University
Director of Cooperative Education in the
Placement Center at the University.
Students may
also minor in Airway Science
by completing 22 semester credit hours
in the following courses: AWS 101 (3
credits), AWS 101L (1 credit), AWS 102
(3 credits), AWS 321 (3 credits), AWS
371 (3 credits), AWS 381 (3 credits),
AWS 404 (3 credits), AWS 407 (3
credits). |
