Department of Transportation Studies has a mission to provide comprehensive transportation education that builds on the latest data, systems and technologies.

Currently the Department offers Master of Science Degree in Transportation Planning and Management, and is affiliated with Doctor of Philosophy in Urban Planning and Environmental Policy.

The Department will begin to offer Bachelor of Science Degree in Maritime Transportation Management and Security in Fall 2010.

Application Steps for Master of Science in Transportation Planning and Management.


Maritime Transportation Management and Security Program will prepare trained people needed for maritime transportation careers. Through this program, the students will understand the key issues in maritime transportation and port operations, and be prepared for careers in maritime transport and logistics, maritime infrastructure engineering and management, port management and operations, security of port facilities, and environmental protection.

Students at the undergraduate level will be prepared to move into the workforce or pursue advanced study at the master’s level in associated academic fields, including the master’s in transportation at Texas Southern University.  Further, students at the graduate level will be qualified to go into managerial or advanced positions or pursue doctoral studies for subsequent careers in research, teaching and other such areas and will create the next generation of faculty for future workforce needs in the industry.

Graduate Studies in Transportation at Texas Southern University focuses on developing an interdisciplinary program, which is designed to train outstanding students for successful careers in the field of transportation. For those focusing on planning or operations careers, the TSU transportation program has a strong foundation in traffic operations ,  transportation planning, public transportation and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). 

Students may structure degree programs to build on these strengths.  For those pursuing management careers, TSU transportation program has strong foundations in transportation principles, economics and finance, and transportation policy and management.  Through a rigorous graduate program of instruction, students can develop analytical and problem-solving, design, planning and systems analysis as well as appropriate research skills for use in public and private transportation-related agencies and organizations.  Graduate students and their faculty advisors form research partnerships based on their particular interest and needs of transportation industry.  Students in transportation are provided with unique opportunities to work with transportation experts through the National Transportation Security Center of Excellence for Petro-Chemical Transportation (NTSCOE-P), Innovative Transportation Research Institute (ITRI) of Texas Southern University, and Center for Transportation Training and Research  (CTTR). The CTTR and ITRI provide programs or training with specialized internships and research exposure through on-going applied and empirical research and demonstration activities.

External Funding Sources to the transportation programs at Texas Southern University include Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Southwest Region University Transportation Center (SWUTC), Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), City of Houston, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST), Federal Transit Administration (FTA), and various other public and private organizations.
